OZZIE RUNNER-UP IN NORTH A1 MEDAL

Craig Osborne capped off another great season for the Snowdogs with an unlucky 2nd placing in the competition best player award in North A1, the Ray Scriven Medal.

Ozzie polled 26 votes to finish only 3 votes behind the winner, David Zahorodni from Tullamarine on 29 votes.  Steven Brne from Albion was 3rd on 23 votes.

Ozzie has won the Ray Scriven Medal twice before, so it is a fine effort to finish runner up in what was a fantastic season for the skipper as he led us to the Grand Final.  He was the highest run scorer in North A1 for the season, with 576 runs @ 44.31, and was also high up in the bowling stats, taking 30 wickets @ 12.10.

The final VTCA North A1 Ray Scriven Medal voting:

29 - David Zahorodni (Tullamarine)
26 - Craig Osborne (St Bernards)
23 - Steven Brne (Albion)
22 - Tarique Jeffrey (Avondale Hts) 19 - Glen Lambeth (Westmeadows) 18 - Joe Misiti (Keilor Park)
18 - Matt Albers (Avondale Hts)

13 - David Roach (St Albans)

HEAT COSTS 1ST XI A SHOT AT TITLE

The first XI were robbed a chance to win the Grand Final when the heat rose to above 38.0deg in the CBD on day 4.

The First XI lost the toss and were forced to field at Avondale Heights against Albion. Some good early bowling had Albion 4/88 on a flat and hard wicket before 76 run partnership helped get albions total to 201. Gerard McMahon the best of the bowlers with 3/41. While Ben Jordan was fantastic in the field, with a cracking catch and 2 Run Outs.
The First Innings batting never really got going for the snowdogs, with only 4 Batsmen making it to double figures. The dogs were bowled out for 150, to trail by 51 - the beauty of it is the match is a 4 day game, and those who missed out on runs in the first innings will have a chance to make good in the 2nd innings. Bernards have Albion 1/12 at stumps, who lead by 63.

On day 3 bernards were able to claim the final 9 wickets and leave themselves a chase of 252 to win the Grand Final. Starting day 4 0/7 bernards were looking good before the first of 3 second innings run outs sent Ivan Jurcic back to the sheds. Anthony Garvey then followed quickly, and Ben Jordan was run out for the 2nd time in the game an then he was quickly followed by the wicket of Andrew Parkin-Coates as he was 'run out' after the wicket keeper clearly broke the bails far before he had the ball, only to deny doing so (if thats the way some people want to play grand finals then so be it. At the end of the day we all know what happened). By that Stage Bernards were 5/67 before Craig Osborne and Tristan Kassis started to make things look easy building a partnership in the attempt to have a crack at the 252 set to win late in the day - only to have their plans ripped away from them after the temperature got over 38.0 meaning play had to stop until it got under 38.0- unfortunatly it did not and Albion were named premiers.

2ND XI CLIAM NORTH A2 PREMIERSHIP

The 2nd XI have claimed the north A2 premiership after defeating Tullamarine.
The Second XI won the toss and chose to bat out at Tullamarine. It was Another shaky start for Bernards who fell to 6/116 before Nick Frayne and Simon Cave put together a 93 run partnership to get the score over 200. It was then Michael DiNatale and Simon Cave who put on a 50 run partnership to frustrate the Tullamarine players and get the total to 275.
The Snowdogs now have Tullamarine 7/150 with Tom Overman and Greg Garth both taking 2 wickets.
On day 3 Bernards took the last 3 wickets early, bowling Tullamarine out for 214 to lead by 61 on first innings. The opening partnership was broken early by Tullamarine, taking the wicket of Anthony Jordan for 2. Mick Thom and Tom Overman then put on a little partnership before Tomo was dismissed for 28. Mick Thom and Nick Serrano then put on 90 for the 3rd wicket, Serrano being dismissed for 40. Mick Thom was then eventually dismissed for 84 as was a major contributor to getting the team to 314. Jason Bourke and Simon Cave also major contributors with 47 and 59 respectively. With a lead of well of 350 it was only a matter of time before Tulla threw in the towel, and they did at 6/81 - Giving the St.Bernards Old Collegians 2nd XI the VTCA North A2 Premiership. Simon Cave was named Man of the Match for his 86 and 59 runs.

UNDER 16'S GALLANT IN DEFEAT

The Under 16's have fallen just 7 runs short of grand final glory going to down to Glenroy at Boeing Reserve on Sunday morning. After restricting the top of the ladder Gelnroy to just 165 and restricting their captain to only 25 runs (after back to back tons) the Bernards boys were not without a chance. A solid opening partnership of 28 got the boys off to a great start and the top order continued the trend building partnerships on their way to the 165 total. At 4/125 Victory was looking likely before the bottom order failed, and left the boys 7 runs short. Liam Jilla made 56 opening the batting 4 other bats making more than 15.

SNOWPUPS U/16s INTO GRAND FINAL THIS WEEKEND V GLENROY AT BOEING RESERVE

The Snowpups Under 16s continued the Grand Final theme for the club by winning their way into the NWCA U/16B Grand Final with a comprehensive Semi Final win over Keilor.
In a match played on Oval 1 on a magnificent turf wicket the Snowpups made 192 (David Wall 71, Jack Gay 36, Luke Madden 30) and rolled Keilor for 112 (Brad Cooper 3/9, Liam Jilla 2/8, Andrew Grosso 2/9, Jordan Schroder 2/14) to win comfortably.
This is a superb effort by the boys under Captain David Wall who have played some great cricket over the whole season, and congratulations also go to Coach Mick Overman, Assistant Mick Jilla and the other parents who have assisted and supported this team all season. It is the first time in nearly 10 years that a St Bernard's Under 16 team has made a Grand Final.
It is fantastic for the club to have both our Senior 1st XI & 2nd XI, as well as our oldest Junior team featuring in Grand Finals.
Glenroy are our opponents in the Grand Final. They are a strong opposition and boast a player who has made two centuries in his past two innings. Glenroy beat us comfortably when we played in the regular season so let's hope we can turn the tables. Good luck boys, do the Snowpups proud!
The Grand Final is on this Saturday & Sunday at Boeing Reserve No.4, Mascoma Street, Strathmore Heights. Hours of play are 8.20am to 11.30am both days.

GRAND FINAL SELECTION

Selection has been done for the first and second XI for the grand final. Click here to see the teams
The first XI will be playing at Avondale Heights against Albion who beat us during the season, but the boys will be looking to tie the season series at 1-1 and take home the premiership.
The Second XI are playing at Tullamarine against Tullamarine who they beat in the first round of the season quite easily, It should be a fantastic match as Tulla beat the top placed Albion in the Semi-Final.

QUEST FOR DOUBLE PREMIERSHIP STILL ALIVE
1st and 2nd XI into grand final!

The St.Bernards first and second XI are into the grand final after both teams recorded dramatic wins in their semi-final matches at the home of cricket! The first XI were bowled out for 138, but with some St.Bernards grit and determination bowled Avondale Heights out for 105. But then were in massive trouble in the second innings before Andrew Parkin-Coates and Gerard McMahon consolidated to get the dogs into an unbeatable position of 121, a lead of 153. Avondale Heights then made 3/5 sending the St.Bernards OCCC 1st XI into the grand final!
The 2nd XI were also in trouble early in the first innings at 5/27 before Tom Overman and Nick Frayne got the boys to the score to 206. The job was still ahead of the bowlers - but they managed to prevail, bowling Seddon out for 167 - beating them for the second time this season, and setting up a super grand final week for the mighty snowdogs!

ALL SET FOR SEMI-FINAL ACTION AT ST BERNARD'S THIS WEEKEND

The Snowdogs are in the Semi Finals and a big weekend of finals cricket is in store this weekend at the Home of Cricket. The home and away games and behind us and having finished 2nd on the ladder in both 1sts & 2nds the Snowdogs are ready to commence quest for finals glory.

On Oval 1 the 1st XI take on Avondale Heights starting at 12.00pm. Our match against Avondale was washed out earlier in the year so there is no exposed form. However recent contests have been closely fought, none more so than 2 years ago when in the Snowdogs last finals appearance, Avondale prevailed in a high scoring Semi making 5/370 (Tarique Jeffrey 196no) to St Bernard's 301. We were beaten by a freak innings and the Snowdogs will be pulling out all stops to ensure this doesn't happen again. We enter the finals in good form with 3 wins in a row against lower ranked opposition including last week's outright win. Good luck to skipper Craig Osborne and all the boys, we have been working hard for this opportunity, let's grab it!

On Oval 2 the 2nd XI come up against the experienced Seddon outfit also starting at 12.00pm. We managed to defeat Seddon in a closely fought one day match during the season which showed there is not much between the teams. The Snowdogs have played some great cricket across the whole season and deserve to be there, its a matter now of putting it together when it really counts.

Click here for the Semi Final teams.

To all players who aren't playing, supporters, family & mates, get down to St Bernard's over the weekend to support the Snowdogs in action, with play on both Saturday & Sunday. Full bar and canteen facilities will be open, support the club on this big weekend. Go Snowdogs!

CAPTAIN CRAIG SNARES 3RD CAREER HAT-TRICK

In his 100th Game for the mighty Snowdogs Craig Osborne capped off a magnificent Captains game in the outright victory against Aberfeldie to send the First XI into a home semi-final birth. After just falling short of a century with the bat and a frustrating 69-run 8th wicket partnership by the opposition on Day 2, Ossie brang himself on in search of the break-through wicket and not only did he do this with his first ball, but he then managed to get his 3rd career hat-trick for the club by claiming the remaining 3 wickets to wrap up the game, finishing with the dream figures of 0.3 overs 3-0.

Ossie opened up his spell with a usual dart to warm up which saw the opposition batsman on 45 play back in front of his stumps to be trapped LBW. Then in came the #10, whose twin brother earlier made a golden duck when batting at number 3, and that twin instinct took over as Ossie fired in another dart on the stumps which saw an action replay of the previous ball. In came the #11 for the hat-trick ball, as Ossie asked his team mates what ball to bowl...it was simple. Again Ossie threw down another quicker ball on the pegs as the batsman again got caught on the crease and with a massive appeal, the Umpire lifted that finger in unison with the appeal to get Ossie that hat-trick and the outright victory. Congratulations Ossie, a superb effort!

ONE'S AND TWO'S TO PLAY HOME FINALS

The club is lucky enough to have 2 teams playing in home semi-finals this week. This is a call to all players, ex-players and supporters not playing to come down and support the boys in their quest for further sucess this season. The FirstXI are playin on oval 1 against Avondale Heights - the team that knocked them out of the finals 2 years ago, While the 2nd XI will be on oval 2 against Seddon. Both games start at 12:00

3 VICTORIES IN FINAL ROUND
Ones and Two's in finals - heartbreak for Three's

The regular season has ended on a high for most of the club, with the first XI recording a big outright victory over Aberfeldie. Bowling aberfeldie out for 76 first innings points were just a formality. Captain Craig Osborne making 97 and Andrew Parkin-Coates 84 were the main run makers in the score of 8/264(dec). St.Bernards then bowled Aberfeldie out for 117 in their second innings which included Craig Osbornes 3rd career Hat-Trick.
The 2nd XI were away to Aberfeldie. Also bowling first they bowled the opposition out for 131 - wickets evenly spread. They then passed the score with ease, getting to 270 off 96 overs.
The thirds had a massive task ahead of them if they were any chance of making the finals -beat the top side. After last week containing them to 258 on a 300+ ground the thirds were every chance of defending 4th spot on the ladder. After a gutsy batting performance by all the team they fell just 1 run short of a famous victory. Tim Raffle and John Hellard both making 50's.
The 4th XI finished off their season in style, after making a massive 335 last week, helped along by 75 from Jake Dunell and 60 from Ross Rodgers and 4x40+ run partnerships. The 4ths then bowled Aberfeldie Park out for 267 Brendan Davey taking 4/40 off 11.

Congratulations on this milestone Andre, we hope you enjoy it with both runs, wickets and a win.

100 GAMES - Craig Osborne
Craig has been the backbone of St.Bernards Cricket Club over the last 6 years winning VTCA best in comps and six club champions on his way to playing his 100th game. 4 BIG WINS earns Presidents shout

After a big day 1 where the club scored over 1000 runs between the 4 sides, AJ was only too happy to shout the bar after 4 big wins in the context of the season. The 1st XI enhanced their chances of playing in finals with a solid bowling performance and win over Footscray United; restricting them to 9/217 in chase of the Snowdogs' 303. Chisel claimed 3/24 to lead the attack with the other wickets shared.

The 2's enforced the follow on and fell just short of an outright victory, bowling the opposition out for 111 and had them effectively 9/75 in the second dig. Bomber Cave backed up his 55 with 3/14. The log grabbed 2 wickets in each innings.

The 3's astonishingly didn't get started until 5.30pm and it was all they needed to wrap up 1st innings points with Nick Serrano 81 and Daff 19 steadying the ship through to victory.

Finally, the 4's recorded a massive win upsetting the previously undefeated Spotswood on the back of three half-centruies Nick Rule (84), Brendan Davey (71) and John Jordan (54). Jake Dunell led the attack on day 2 grabbing a 5-wicket haul in a well-deserved win by the boys!

As the final round now approaches, the 1st XI are 3rd, 8 points ahead of 5th and on the verge of finals appearance. The 2's are guaranteed a semi-final spot and the 3's have a crunch game against the top side in a do or die game to sneak into the finals. SNOWPUP STARS IN NWCA REP. SIDE

one of our U12 players, Tom Madden, has just completed a fanatstic two weeks of rep cricket playing in the NWCA Mitchell Shield side. He made 196 runs @ 65, took 4 wickets, 5 catches and assisted in 2 runouts to be voted by the Umpires as the Player of the Series. His form continued in the Grand Final (unfortunately lost by the NWCA) when he top scored with 31 out of 119 and took 2/20 off his 6 overs. He was also voted the Player of the Finals Series by the umpires.

ROUND 8, DAY 1

With the forecast for saturday innitailly being for hot conditions it looked like a chance to get back to full two day cricket. But with the rain Friday night leading into Saturday this was not the case. The 3rds and 4ths were both called off, While the 1st and 2nds had reduced overs.

The firsts where at home for the first time this year, playing 8th placed Parkville. With rain delaying the start of play only 54 overs were possible. Losing the toss and being sent in Bernards got off to a shaky start, to end up 6/160 with 13 Overs to bat next week. Ivan Jurcic made 28 opening the batting for the first time, Andrew Parkin-Coates made 48, while Tristan Kassis and Chris Spinella are not out on 28 and 21.

The 2nds played the 4th placed Parkville 2nds at Parkville. After also losing the toss were sent in to bat, with only the 8 overs lost due to rain. A solid start by the openers and top order Bernards were 4/140 in difficult batting conditions. Those conditions proved too dificult for the lower order, with the side collapsing to be all out for 174. Greg Garth batted brilliantly making 51* he was well supported by Anthony Garvey 47, and Mick Thom 35. Parkville are 0/20, with 80 overs to get the remaining runs next week.

DISSAPOINTING WEEKEND

Round 8 had the 3rd and 4th XI back in action for a one-dayer and the 1st and 2nd XI playing their last one-dayer of the season.
The firsts travelled to Seddon in an important match with both teams being in the top 4. Batting first Seddon lost an early wicket and were 1/4 but managed to get to 9/194 off their full 40 overs, Bernards skipper Craig Osborne the main destroyer with 3/28 well supported by Gerard McMahon who took 2/37. After losing 2 early wickets the chase was always going to be hard for Bernards who were eventually bowled out for 170. Osborne(77) and Parkin-Coates(40) the best with the bat.
The 2nd XI played at home for the 4th time in 5 games, playing the undefeated Seddon. The Seddon openers got off to a fairly good start before a top order colapse caused by Rex Bennett meant they could only get to the total of 7/170. Rex the best of the bowlers with 3/24. The Bernards openers also got off to reasonable start before also having a top order collapse to be 4/33. Then some marvelous batting by Ben Jordan and Ivan Jurcic steadied the ship and steered the dogs to victory, breaking the clubs record 5th wicket partnership on their way. Jordan with 72* and Ivan Jurcic 71.
The Third XI played Altona North @ Altona in what turned out to be a dissapointing game. Batting first bernards got to 7/162 off their 36 overs, with Tom Overman continuing his great form making 63. Altona North were then able to chase the target down to post a total of 7/173 off thier 36 overs. Connor O'Brien the best of the bowlers with 2/40.
The 4ths returned from Christmas to also play Altona North at home. After being bowled out for 112 (Luke Baird 23, John Jordan 23) off only 35 overs it was always going to be tough to defend. Altona getting the runs with an over to spare. Phil Conlan 2/3 was the best bowler.

KEV'S BIG DAY OUT - DOUBLE HAT-TRICK

Kevin O'Connell created Snowdogs history in the 2nd XI on Saturday taking a Double Hat-Trick, 4 Wickets in a row, against Westmeadows.  In a fantastic spell of spin bowling, taking 6 for 18 off 4.2 overs, Kev had the batsmen in a complete spin as he cleaned up the last 4 wickets of the innings for 0 runs, to have Westmeadows all out for only 77 in a massive 1 day win for the Snowdogs 2s.

Kev's 4 wickets in the Double Hat-Trick occured as follows:

Over 3.5 - Caught by Mick Di Natale at backward square leg from a top edged pull shot that was skied.

Over 3.6 - Bowled with a perfect spinning ball that came back through the gate between bat and pad to take the top of middle stump. End of the over gave everyone a chance to catch their breath while Dina bowled a maiden at the other end, with Kev then able to have a crack at the hat-trick.

Over 4.1 - Caught by Greg Garth at short cover from a full blooded drive that only went a few centermetres above the turf.  An extremely sharp catch low down at his ankles by Garthy sparked huge celebrations for Kev's hat-trick.

Over 4.2 - Stumped by keeper Ben Jordan as the Westmeadows No.11 foolishly took the suggestion from the Snowdogs close fielders to advance down the wicket and have a go.  Kev spun one past the bat and BJ did the rest, taking the bails off to leave him stranded and more celebrations resulted, the rare double hat-trick a special moment for Kev and all Snowdogs!

It is the first time a double hat-trick has been taken by a Snowdogs player in 40 years of senior cricket.  It was Kev's first wickets at 2nds level, and what a way to do it!  Surely there will be many more to come at the higher levels for this promising young left arm wrist spinner!  Well done Kev!

1st XI TIE, 2nd XI WIN

With just the two matches this week it was a rather quiet day for the Snowdogs. The first XI headed out to Westmeadows in search of an early 2008 victory. Batting first the dogs posted a total of 9/170, with Craig Osborne making 52 and Gary McIntyre and Andre Noonan chipping in with 39 and 27. After getting some early wickets Westmeadows were able to fight their way through the innings to also post 170. The match ending in a tie.
The 2nds also played westmeadows at home. After being told to field Bernards managed to run through the Westmeadows batting order bowling them out for just 77. Rex Bennet and Mick DiNatale taking 2 wickets each and Kevin O'Connell cleaning up the tail with 6/18. BEN JORDAN SMASHES RECORD HIGHEST SCORE

A fantastic innings of 188 by Ben Jordan on Saturday in the 3rd XI saw BJ break the club record for the highest individual score by any Snowdog player in our proud history.  In one of the best innings ever played at the Home of Cricket, BJ despatched the ball to all parts of the ground, and single handedly destroyed the Strathmore attack.
His innings was chanceless and included 28 4s an d 2 6s.  He came in at No.4 when the score was 2/57 and at the end of the epic innings was last man out, in the second last over of the day for 188 as he chased the rarely made feat in local cricket of a double ton.  The 3rd XI racked up a mammoth score of 339 on the back of BJ's work as a number of useful partnerships contributed to a huge win.
The previous record of 165 was held by current veteran Andre Noonan who made his then club record score in the 2nd XI way back in 1990/91.
It is BJ's first ton in a long career for the Snowdogs, and what a big one it was!  Let's hope there are more to come.  Great work BJ!

INTERNATIONAL RECRUIT

We are happy to announce that we have secured the services of an English player as our international recruit for the season, Andrew Parkin-Coates.

Andrew is a 22 year old top/middle order bat, who also bowls medium pace, from Yorkshire. Andrew has played for England under age teams, and has had a stint at County Cricket, playing for Nottinghamshire. He is currently playing in the Yorkshire League, where he regularly locks horns with Duncan Snell, our previous English player from 2 seasons ago. Duncan recommended Andrew as a quality player who will add a lot to our club.

Andrew also has played before in Australia, having spent a season in 2004/05 playing District/Premier cricket with North Melbourne CC, where he made his way up the grades and finished the year with some strong performances in the North 1sts.
